Culinary is the art of preparing and presenting the food. A person who is an expert in this field - one who not only has a talent in the kitchen but that understands food science, nutrition, and diet - is called a Culinarian or Chef, and you can find them in hotels and restaurants around the world. Culinarians Day, held annually on July 25th, is a day to thank and celebrate the people who are serving up meals around the world, and the art of cooking in general.
(Fun Fact: the hat that chefs wear is called a Toque Blanche, which means white hat in French. It is believed that the height of the hat symbolizes the seniority and rank of the chef in the kitchen and the folds in the hat express the qualification of the chef.)
Around the world, this day is celebrated by conducting cooking events and competitions. At Westbury Senior Living, we will be celebrating with acknowledgement and gratitude of our Regional Culinary Director, Sarah Bohler, and their team!
Sarah originally started out in pastry, graduating in 2013 from Forest Park in St. Louis, with a pastry degree. She created wedding cakes for about ten years but missed the fast pace of restaurants. So, she went back to it. Sarah’s work ethic is amazing, and she has helped us through a time when we did not have a Culinary Director in the building. We are very thankful to have her and will miss having her around when she goes back to her own community.
Sarah is an adrenaline junkie. She loves ziplining, free falling, cliff diving, and has been skydiving twice. When not working, she loves to play her drums, saying music helps her diffuse the stress of the day. The famous person she would like to prepare a meal for is Alton Brown. She would love to pick his brain about food service.
The signature sweet our Regional Culinary Director prepares for our community is gooey butter cake. It's a new thing that not a lot of residents have had, but it's an instant favorite by most. Sarah’s favorite dish to prepare is burgers on the flat top.
Our restaurant shines because we cater to individual wants, needs, and diets. The culinary team is brand new, but they are working hard to take the food quality and service to the next level. I have no doubt with the current staff, we are going to do great things!
We could not do what we do at Butler's without this hardworking team! If you want to get in on the Culinarian Day Fun, you can also celebrate the day with your friends and family by cooking some new recipes. Up the game by sharing pictures or video of the recipe and your adventures on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. tagged with #CulinariansDay.
